Spring & Fall Discovery Cruises

Discovery Cruises emphasize fundamental skills of inquiry through first-hand observations of natural phenomena and collection of data.

Each 2-hour cruise will have students actively participating in learning from the major disciplines in oceanography.

As our "guest" scientists cruise from station to station, professional scientists, educators and mariners encourage inquiry and discovery.

Explore chemical, physical, biological and meteorological oceanography with your students.

Collect samples of seawater to determine temperature, density, salinity, dissolved O2, and dissolved CO2.

Learn how the weather affects sampling; sample bottom communities using traps, trawl or dredge and collect surface organisms with plankton nets.

Manipulating research equipment, sampling, observing and handling (when appropriate) sea life are all part of each cruise.

Students and teachers alike record data that is useful for follow-up.

The hands-on teaching and learning techniques provide high quality, relevant, meaningful and FUN experiences for all ages. It is our goal to develop awareness, knowledge and responsible behavior concerning the sustainability of ecosystems upon which all life depends.
