Lobsters do not fight to the death:

• Chemical signals tell them if they had met before in battle. If they recognize each other there is no fight - dominance is maintained.
• Strangers "push and shove" to "claw-lock". Battle may get violent with the loser possibly losing a claw.

During molting a lobster's gills stop beating. If it takes too long they could suffocate so the lobster may sacrifice a claw or leg to get the job done.

It takes about 48 hours for a lobster's shell to harden but it may remain vulnerable for up to two more weeks.

Females carry up to 100,000 eggs for almost a year.

Temperature and salinity must be just right before she will extrude the eggs.

Nearly 90% of the larvae die during the 1st two weeks.

Larvae are part of the plankton community for about a month or until they gain enough strength to swim to the bottom.
